OBSCURE BLACK HISTORY STUFF....YEAH I KNOW IT'S MARCH ......
Okay I know I'm late when it comes to Black History Month but this this stuff is good to know all year round. Here ya go :
THE NEGRO MOTORIST GREEN BOOK - Because there was so much discrimination when it came to public transportation a lot of Blacks chose to drive themselves to different places all over the United States. Some also kept buckets in their cars and used them as toilets rather face physical harm or death just for trying to use a restroom.
Thank God for Victor H. Green ! He was a New York postal worker and a travel agent (I'm impressed) who, knew the perils Black people faced because as a Black man he faced them as well.
In 1936 he published a book called The Negro Motorist Green Book. This book helped Black travelers find gas stations, lodging, and businesses in a safe environment because in those days there were places where if you were Black in a White town at night your life was in danger.
Over the years the book expanded to also cover Mexico, Canada,Bermuda, and the Carribean.
After the passage of the 1964 Civil Right's Act people felt the book was needed anymore and it became obsolete and went into obserity.
We don't need it anymore ? I don't know about that........Some places are still dangerous......
Mr. Green passed away in 1960 and hopefully he passed away knowing that he probably saved countless of Black lives.
RICE/KING : Both Condolezza Rice and Martin Luther King, Jr. both started college at the age of 15 !!!!! Wow. What did they major in ? Look it up ! I can't do it all for you :o)
THE HARLEM GLOBETROTTERS formed in 1927 and was a serious basketball team until integration started. Once integration started their best players left to join the NBA. After that they became an "entertainment only" basketball team.
DR. MAYME A. CLAYTON, a Los Angeles librarian and historian collected over 3 million items related to Black history.
Saint John Coltrane African Orthodox Church : Is a church in San Fransisco who uses John Coltrane music for religious discovery.
JAMES MEREDITH: In 1962 he became the first black student to enroll at the University of Mississippi (Oct. 1). President Kennedy sends 5,000 federal troops after rioting breaks out because of his enrollment..OH BY THE WAY LAST MONTH A NOOSE WAS PLACED ON HIS STATUE. MR. MEREDITH IS STILL ALIVE (HE'S 80) TOO BAD HE HAD TO LIVE TO SEE A NOOSE PLACED ON THIS STATUE IN THE 21ST CENTURY !!!!
IF YOU HAVE ANY BLACK HISTORY FACTS LET ME KNOW OR SHARE THEM WITH OTHER PEOPLE. EVERY RACE AND ETHNICITY NEEDS TO KNOW ABOUT BLACK HISTORY.
