I KNOW SHE'S NOT REAL BUT........

The 1970's was an interesting decade for cartoons. It marked the beginning of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids and  marked the debut of the character Valerie Brown  from Josie and the Pussycats. The Valerie character was the first African-American female character on a regular Saturday morning cartoon series. The Hardy Boys drummer Pete Jones had been the first African-American male to appear on Saturday mornings a year earlier, in 1969.

Josie and the Pussycats was a cartoon about a pop music group. While they were doing their tours they always found themselves in the middle of some type of strange mystery. Kind of like Scooby Doo which was also produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.

The cartoon ran from 1970 to 1972. Valerie's singing voice was provided by Patrice Holloway, sister of singer Brenda Holloway, and her speaking voice was done by Barbara Pariot shown in the picture below. Reruns of the cartoon started in 1975 and continued through the 1980's and the 1990's. Now the cartoon can be found on DVD so Valerie will be immortal ! There's a lot of things we now take for granted but watching Valerie as a small kid was a very unique experience !

WHITE PEOPLE WITH AFROS ?

I was surfing the internet this morning and stumbled across a photo from the 18th century that showed a white woman with a big giant Afro !  I did a little investigating and here's what I found out.

The Circassians are an ethnic group from the North Caucasus, an area in southwest Russia between the Black and Caspian seas.

In the 18th century Russians drove the Circassians from their homeland and deported them to the Ottoman Empire. At least 600,000 people lost their lives to massacre, starvation, and the elements while hundreds of thousands more were forced to leave their homeland. By 1864, three-fourths of the population was annihilated, and the Circassians had become one of the first stateless peoples in modern history.

Russia has denied all claims of a genocide and last year there were protests regarding the Sochi Olympics because the event fell on the 150th anniversary of the genocide.

Historians say all these people did was comb out their hair. Really ? So that's how they got hair like Frederick Douglas ?

After centuries of race & ethnic mixing, genocide, etc. most of the Afros are gone. However, their  traditional hat is called " The Georgian Chokha" which  looks like a big curly Afro !

So the next time you see a White person with an Afro they may not be copying you. You may be copying them.......

EVERYBODY WAS KUNG FU FIGHTING !

In the 1970's  every one from Elvis to the mailman was during some form of martial arts. Most people did it for fun & exercise & some took it more seriously. Jim Kelly falls into the category of the "serious".

Jim Kelly was born May 5, 1946 in Millsburg Kentucky. He was always in sports & after his first year of college he dropped out to study  Shorin-ryu karate. I'm pretty sure back then people thought he was crazy!

By the 1970's he was an experienced martial artist, he had learned another form of karate called Okinawan, and he opened up his own karate school in the Crenshaw district of Los Angeles (shout out to Crenshaw !)

His school became so popular he started teaching karate to celebrities which landed him his first acting role in the 1972  movie Melinda where he played a karate instructor .

Then a year later Jim's whole world changed. Warner Brothers Studio was about to film the first Chinese martial arts film ever produced by a major Hollywood studio. It was called ENTER THE DRAGON,  starring none other than Bruce Lee !

Filming was to start in a matter of days & the actor Rockne Tarkington, backed out at the last minute so the studio needed a replacement.

Producer Fred Weintraub heard about Jim Kelly's school, went to check it out & history was made !! Jim became the first Black martial arts film star !

ENTER THE DRAGON was a huge success & Jim went on to make other films with him as the star or he was paired up in movies with Jim Brown & Fred Williamson.

After his movie career ended he didn't mind because he was an athlete first and and an actor 2nd. He still kept active & would attend various fan conventions and starred in a  Nike commercial with LeBron James !

He died on June 29, 2013, of cancer at his home in San Diego, California. He was 67 years old. I remember that day very well. My heart sank  I've watched his movies off and on through out the years, taking them for granted. The 6 foot two Brotha with the big afro and the six pack abs may be gone but I just finished watching ENTER THE DRAGON. I guess Jim will always be with us.

WHAT HAPPENED TO HIS HEAD ?

There have always been speculation & conspiracy theories regarding experts that have been done on Black people. What your about to read is not a conspiracy theory or speculation . It's fact and it's more disturbing than any horror film.

The story takes place in Lyles Station , Indiana. Lyles Station started out as a Black settlement created by  freed slave Joshua Lyles in the 1840's and the town flourished. It is now considered an historical landmark.

Unfortunately in 1928 Lyles Station became known for something else.

In 1928 Black parents were told that there was a new treatment for ringworm. It was a lie.

Ten children, including five year old Vertus Wellborn Hardiman didn't get treated for ringworm but were given a massive dose of radiation. From that day forward his life was never the same. The radiation slowly began to dissolve his skull bones to the point that he had to wear hats & wigs for the rest of his life.

He literally developed a massive hole in his head and everyday he had to clean his head wounds.
Despite all this, he worked for the Los Angeles County General Hospital for 45 years & maintained an excellent work record.

He became friends with a fellow church member, Wilbert Smith,PhD,author, & writer and that's when Vertus told him what happened to him when he was five and why his head is always covered. It was a secret he had been keeping for over 70 years.

He passed away on June 1, 2007 at the age of 85 but the story doesn't end with his death.

Before he died he allowed Wilbert Smith to make a documentary about what happened to him & in the film he finally shows the world what he's been hiding under his hats. The documentary was released in 2011 and a scholarship has been named in his honor.

Of course there are people that try to bring up how other races were experimented on and how Black experiments have nothing to do with racism because Whites have been experimented on as well. You can draw your own conclusions.

All I know is despite slavery, lynchings, & experiments :

"STILL I RISE " !

NOBLE JOHNSON; MAN OF A THOUSAND FACES

Noble Johnson

Before Tyler Perry there was Noble Johnson. Noble Johnson was born Noble Mark Johnson on April 18, 1881 in Marshall Missouri. Not only was he one of the first Black actors in Hollywood but in 1916, with the help of his brother, founded a movie studio! It was called The Lincoln Motion Picture Company. He wanted to make movies for Black people that featured Black people because the Black population was being ignored by Hollywood or they were basically portrayed as a bunch of uneducated buffoons.

The money Noble made from acting he invested it right back into his movie studio. His looks, height, & athletic build enabled him to get a lot of work as a character actor and he portrayed everyone from African, Native American, Arab, and Latino. He played in westerns, adventure, & horror films.

In  1920 he resigned as president of his studio because his acting schedule kept him away from the day to day responsibilities of running a studio and production costs were high and sales were low. The studio closed in 1923 however his acting continued.  Even when the silent film era ended, he still found work in Hollywood which was hard because a lot white actors had a hard time transiting from silent films to “talkies”.

Noble retired from acting in 1950 and passed away in 1978 at the ripe old age of 96. He's buried in California next to his wife.

SHE DID THAT ON A PAIR OF SKATES !

One of the greatest ice skaters to ever grace the ice was French skater Surya Bonaly. She was born on December 15, 1973, in Nice, France. She was adopted when she was eight months old and began training under Didier Gailhaguet, the President of the French Ice Sports Federation, when she was about ten years old.  She is recognized as the only skater, male or female, to do a backward flip and land on one skate.

Surya looked totally different than the other skaters. She had beautiful black skin, beautiful smile, a strong athletic body that looked like she did additional training beyond ice skating, and her costumes, designed by French fashion designer Christian Lacroix were absolutely amazing!! She looked like a 20th century version of Josephine Baker on ice skates!! She wore vibrant reds, peach, bright pinks, dazzling yellows & powder blues that offset her skin tone perfectly.

She was the epitome of Black beauty, class, grace, & strength.

She won the French national figure skating title nine times and the European figure skating title five times. She won a silver medal at the World Figure Skating championships three times, and placed 4th at the 1994 Winter Olympics and 5th at the 1992 Winter Olympics.

In 1998, in the middle of a competition, she did her famous back flip which was not allowed during that particular competition. The rumor is she did the back flip on purpose because she knew she didn’t have a chance to get into the 1998 Olympics so she knew that back flip would be her signature. Needless to say that move has now become a part of figure skating history.

She became a United States Citizen in 2004 and currently lives In Las Vegas Nevada and teaches ice skating. Other Black skaters came before her and have left their mark but I don’t think as long as I live I will ever see a skater like the great Surya Bonaly.
